Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream will soak into the render surrounding the pebbles however will not protect the actual pebbles themselves. If there are any gaps between the render and pebbles, or any loose/missing pebbles, these will be areas that can allow for water ingress.

Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream should be applied when the weather is mild and dry in the days before and after application. We advise not to apply if rain is forecast for the next 24 hours. Minimum application temperature is 5 °C and rising. Cold temperatures can slow the absorption of Stormdry and the product should not be applied if temperatures are forecast to drop below 5 °C overnight or in the first few days after application.

Stormdry® Cream should be applied to dry, porous surfaces. It should not be applied over sealed or painted surfaces.

The answer to this depends on when the waterproofing product was originally applied.

For the first 1 - 2 years after application, the waterproofing product previously applied will typically prevent Stormdry Masonry Cream from penetrating into the masonry.

However, most waterproofing products typically only penetrate 1mm - 2mm into the substrate that they are applied to, and as a consequence are vulnerable to the effects of UV light and weathering, and rapidly degrade once applied.

After 1 - 2 years most waterproofing products will have broken down sufficiently to allow an application of Stormdry Masonry Cream to be carried out effectively, and for the product to then be able to dissipate through the substrate and create an effective waterproof barrier.

Stormdry® Masonry Protection Cream is a deeply penetrating water-repellent silicone cream for the protection of external masonry. It penetrates into brickwork, masonry, mortar and concrete, where it will cure to a colourless, natural finish, lasting for over 25 years.

Stormdry Masonry Cream is suitable for application to external lime based render as long as it is dry, not painted or previously sealed with a treatment.

Stormdry Masonry Cream will last for at least 12 months in an unopened tin that is stored in a cool, well ventilated area at temperatures of at least 5 degrees c.

However, once opened and exposed to air the product will have a shorter usable life of around 6 - 12 months assuming that the tin is resealed and is stored as above.

Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream when applied will go on as a white cream. As it penetrates into the substrate the product will become colourless. Once Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream has penetrated it may darken the substrate at first but this will gradually fade over time. The timing of this will be variable and is dependent on the ambient conditions, the type of material this is being applied to and how much moisture is within the substrate.

Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream cannot be applied to a sealed or painted surface, the cream will not be absorbed into the substrate and will wash off with weathering.

Paint (and similar coatings) should be removed before the application of Stormdry Masonry Cream to allow Stormdry to penetrate into the substrate.

Water based masonry paint can be applied 3 days after Stormdry application, but no longer than 10 days. Solvent/Oil based paints can be applied after 10 days. Note these paints are not breathable.

We would not advise the Stormdry is applied below ground or even DPC level. Products such as Tanking slurry should be used to prevent water ingress in below ground structures.

Stormdry isn't recommended for use on brick flower beds with soil. As the wall will be earth retaining, it could negatively affect soil moisture and drainage, impacting plant health, and its effectiveness may be limited in constant contact with damp soil.

Thanks for your question. Yes, Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream be applied to Medium Density blockwork. Please note that the absorption rate be slower than standard bricks. The size of the capillaries may impact the performance of Stormdry Cream, so overcoating with Stormdry MAX may be necessary.

Solvent-based paints can be applied over a wall cured with Stormdry, with some reduction in breathability. It should not inhibit the effectiveness of the waterproofing.

Water-based paints can be applied between 2-10 days after the initial cure, but there may be reduced paint adhesion.

Yes, as long as there is some sand content within the lime mortar mix.

We recommend waiting 1 to 2 months before applying Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream onto recently applied lime mortar. Earlier application may inhibit the mortar curing process as well as Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream penetration.

If there is cement in the mortar mix, Stormdry Masonry Cream can be applied after 2 to 3 weeks.

Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream has been formulated to cure to a colourless finish with no gloss or pigmentation.

Because Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream achieves its water repellency by lining the pores of the masonry rather than by coating the masonry surface, it will not leave a glossy sheen associated with some masonry sealant products.

In some rare cases, after an initial application of Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream, there can be a slight darkening of the brickwork, but this will fade with time and will return to normal.

We always recommend carrying out a small discrete test area prior to the full application of Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream to masonry to confirm aesthetic acceptability.

It may take up to two months after application for the full beading effect to appear when rainfall hits the treated wall.

Stormdry can be applied to damp / wet walls, although it will slow down the absorption time. It will not affect the performance once Stormdry Masonry Cream has 'soaked in'.

Once a wall has been treated with Stormdry Masonry Cream, new mortar will struggle to adhere to it unless the following steps are carried out:

Rake the existing mortar out to at least 25 mm to remove any existing mortar that has absorbed Stormdry Masonry Cream. Repoint with a sand:cement mortar containing Stormdry Repointing Additive No.1.

The above also applies to lime mortar.

It is always recommended to apply Stormdry Masonry Cream to a small area to check compatibility before applying it over a wide area.

A second coat is not necessary, assuming it was applied in accordance with our preparation and application guidelines and to a compatible substrate.

We do not recommend applying more than one coat as this may reduce wall breathability.

Stormdry Masonry Cream is designed to prevent rain penetration through an external wall, whilst allowing water vapour from within the building to pass through to the outside.

For this reason, we do not recommend it for use internally.
